Band Lesson Plans

Beginning Band Lesson Plan – 30min.

1. Setup – 5min.

Students will walk in an orderly manner, grab their music and instruments, go straight to their seats, and begin assembling their instruments. They can play a few notes to warm up, but should stop and come to attention when the teacher signals to do so.

2. Pg. 6, #14 Rolling Along (review) – 5 min.

Does the group play the correct notes? Does the group play the correct rhythm? Go back and work sections that are struggling.

3. Pg. 6, #15 Rhythm Rap – 5 min.

Explain to the class what half notes are. Practice clapping just half notes with the class. When finished, have the class clap and count #15 together. Address any issues with rhythm.

4. Pg. 6, #16 The Half Counts – 5min.

Have the class apply this new rhythm by playing #16. Address any wrong notes by isolating sections and play through the song at least two more times.

5. Pg. 6 # 17 Hot Cross Buns – 5 min.

First, have the band sing this familiar song while following along in their music. Next, have the band play through the entire song. Start working on this song in sections.

6. Teardown – 5min.

Students will put their instruments and music away and then line up quietly for their next class. Before they put their things away, remind the students to practice what they played today and to start looking at the next song.

High School Band Lesson Plan – 50 min.

1. Setup – 5 min.

Students will walk in an orderly manner, grab their music and instruments, go straight to their seats, and begin assembling their instruments. They can play a few notes to warm up, but should stop and come to attention when the teacher signals to do so.

2. Warm up – 10 min.

Have the students do breathing exercises, slow scales, articulation exercises, dynamics, and fast scales. Groups of these techniques will be combined into a few exercises. Quick announcements at the end.

3. Sight reading – 5 min.

Read a new piece and only stop when the group falls apart. Pick up where they left off.

4. March piece – 10 min.

Work on the middle section focusing on the rhythms. Run through the piece.

5. Multi-movement piece (andante mvmt.) – 15 min.

Work on intonation in sections throughout the movement. Run through the movement.

 

6. Announcements/teardown – 5 min.

Announcements from the beginning of class will be repeated. Students will then put their music and instruments away and go to their next class in an orderly manner.
